Why are we selling this tamping mat?

We particularly like the 90° angle at the front of the tamping mat. This supports the grip of the non-slip mat and eliminates a typical problem area, the front of the table or worktop. With classic tamping mats, the table is only protected from above. However, tamping is always done at the edge. This quickly leads to many dents on the work surface.

What makes good tamping?

"Tamping" refers to pressing the coffee grounds in the portafilter. The pressure of approx. 8 - 15 kg compresses the coffee grounds in the portafilter.

For good tamping, the preparation of the ground coffee in the sieve is crucial. If air bubbles are trapped or if the coffee powder is compressed more in some places, the resistance of the coffee puck to the water changes.

Good espresso extraction is enabled by uniform resistance. Lower resistance leads to faster water flow and a correspondingly uneven extraction. In the worst case, channeling occurs. In this channeling, the brewing water flows off significantly faster in some places, and over-extraction takes place.
