WBC temperature measurement protocol for espresso machines

The World Barista Championships uses professional espresso machines that have been tested according to the Specialty Coffee Association protocol.

We use this protocol as part of our dual boiler test series . Our more detailed test protocol is documented and further specified here .

We first used the WBC temperature protocol in our test of the La Marzocco Linea Micra. This protocol is only partially suitable for testing espresso machines for home use, as it queries high frequencies. However, it is well-suited to showing at what point an espresso machine is starting to fail.

In addition to the WBC protocol, we use our own protocol, which is more closely aligned with the use of a home espresso machine. With this protocol, we also try to figure out how to best use a machine to get the most out of it. An example of such an adapted protocol is our test of the Quickmill Orione 3000 or the Gaggia Classic .
