Combating coffee borer (Broca) with organic agents

Kaffeebohrer (Broca) mit organischen Mitteln bekämpfen

Exciting information from our training farm, Santa Rita Specialty Coffee. We're experimenting with organic measures to combat Broca, among other things. Our partner and local agronomist, Roberto Castellano, recently explained the following method to us:

An effective measure against Broca's disease is a product called Biomix, a combination of two different fungi that have the potential to parasitize Broca's disease (Hypothenemus hampei). The two fungi are called Beauveria bassiana and Metarizum. During application, each plant and each fruit is treated. The infection process of the borreliosis occurs in three phases.

    1. Contact of the spores with the outer skin of the insect and germination

    2. Penetrating the outer skin of the insect

    3. Development of the fungus inside the insect, which ultimately leads to death.

Beauveria bassiana is used in various areas of organic farming as an organic insecticide. The fungus is excellent for controlling all types of arthropods. Beauveria bassiana is non-toxic to farm workers and has little impact on non-targeted insects ( 1 ).

This method can also be successfully applied to fallen cherries on the ground. Keep in mind: the coffee borer prefers to attack ripe and overripe cherries.
