Coffee has a historical reputation for being unhealthy. Yet, there's quite a bit of evidence suggesting that coffee is actually healthy. Yes, there are components in coffee that, in isolation, are carcinogenic. These are called furan and acrylamide and are formed during roasting. However, this has not been proven for coffee itself. In fact, the problem is probably more that for some people, coffee is an accompaniment to smoking.
In addition to its invigorating effect, the high antioxidant content is a positive aspect to note. A study also shows that coffee has a preventative effect on type 2 diabetes. But hear for yourselves what Prof. Chahan Yeretzian has to say about it.
Professor Yeretzian conducts research on coffee at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in Wädenswil. He is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, and Diagnostics. Chahan Yeretzian is the founder of the Coffee Excellence Center and launched the first postgraduate study program on coffee as a CAS at ZHAW.
