Why do we sell this tamping mat in narrow?

We particularly like the 90° angle on the front of the tamping mat. This supports the grip of the non-slip mat and eliminates a typical problem area, the front of the table or worktop. With classic tamping mats, the table is only protected from above. However, tamping often takes place at the edge. This quickly leads to many nicks on the work surface.

What makes good tamping?

"Tamping" refers to the pressing of the coffee grounds in the portafilter. The coffee grounds are compacted in the portafilter by a pressure of approx. 8 - 15 kg.

For good tamping, the preparation of the grounds in the sieve is crucial. If air bubbles are trapped or if more coffee grounds are compressed in some places, the resistance of the coffee puck to the water changes.

Good espresso extraction is made possible by uniform resistance. Lower resistance leads to faster water flow and a correspondingly uneven extraction. In the worst case, channeling occurs. In this channel formation, the brewing water flows much faster in some places and over-extraction occurs.
