Eureka Mignon Magnifico espresso grinder in the test

The Eureka Mignon Magnifico is similar to the Eureka Mignon Specialità in almost every respect. Only the burrs are a significant difference. The 55-grit burrs feature Eureka's patented Diamond Inside deep-temperature treatment. However, this treatment had no effect on particle distribution, dead space , or grinding speed compared to the Specialità we previously tested.

For this reason, we refer you to the review of the Eureka Mignon Specialità on our blog, and in this video and report, we have focused only on the clearly discernible differences. The video also includes a taste comparison of several espressos from both grinders.

Differences Eureka Specialità and Eureka Magnifico

It's a bit strange how quickly Eureka releases new grinders onto the market. A recent count brought me to over 30 espresso grinders. A closer look behind the scenes, however, quickly reveals the difference. Sometimes the grinders differ only in details such as design or grinding discs. Many grinders belong to grinder families, such as the Eureka Mignon family. These include Specialità and Magnifico, as well as Perfetto, Manuale, Zero, and Turbo.

The Specialitá and Eureka Mignon Magnifico differ in the manufacturing and hardening of their burrs. Both mills use 55mm burrs. However, the Magnifico's burrs are treated with Eureka's patented deep-temperature treatment of -193°C. According to the manufacturer, this results in a higher crystal structure, which reduces the wear and tear of the mill.

Eureka states that 65-grit burrs can grind up to 1300 kg. We didn't grind that amount of coffee! However, we can assume that conventional Eureka Mignon Specialità grinders can easily grind 500 kg of espresso.

Assuming a weekly consumption of 1 kg of coffee, which hardly any average household can manage, this would mean a lifespan of a good 10 years. With Diamond technology, the lifespan is extended even further.

We've seen the Eureka Mignon Magnifico for around €490, while the Eureka Mignon Specialità costs around €440. These additional costs will certainly pay for themselves over time.

    Effects of grinding discs

In any case, the grinding discs have no effect on the grinder's performance during normal use. In terms of sensory perception, we had a few espresso shots where the Specialità tasted slightly better, and in other shots, the Magnifico was slightly better in a cross-comparison.

The noise level and dead space differed only slightly. The speed of the two grinders was also comparable in our test.

Only when measuring the temperature of six extractions at 30-second intervals did the Specialità heat up to an average of 37.2°C, while the Magnifico remained at only 34.4°C. This may be an argument in favor of the Magnifico in some situations with higher loads.

Both grinders are consistent and generally easy to use. The particle distribution of the Magnifico has a slightly higher fines content, but a narrower main peak—both values are close to the micron values of the Specialità.

What both grinders have in common is that they have weaknesses in the adjustability of the grinding level. The grinding wheel is small in diameter and has few markings, making it difficult to adjust the grinder forwards and backwards to the same point.

Conclusion on the Eureka Mignon Magnifica

Anyone who chooses a Eureka Mignon Magnifica is certainly making a good choice. The additional cost will pay for itself in the long run, and the shelf life of the Specialità is already very good.

Another positive aspect is that the ground coffee heats up less when using the Magnifica. This is especially important if the grinder is to be used frequently in shared apartments or at a party, for example.
