Recipe for the perfect latte macchiato with the 90ml pitcher

A latte macchiato impresses with its characteristic layers of milk, espresso, and milk foam. With the 90ml latte macchiato pitcher, preparing this classic is easy.

Step 1: Frothing milk correctly

  • Milk selection: For the best latte macchiato, you can use different types of milk. Traditional cow's milk provides a wonderfully creamy foam, but oat milk or soy milk are also popular alternatives. Our Ben and Michel have released a video where they test various barista oat milk varieties – a good tip if you are unsure about your choice.
  • Amount: You need about 120–160 ml of milk. Remember that milk increases in volume when frothed, so use a pitcher with a larger volume, about 600 ml, for the frothing process.
  • Temperature: The optimal temperature for milk foam is around 63 degrees Celsius. A simple trick: if the pitcher is no longer comfortable to hold at the bottom, you have reached the right temperature.

Step 2: Preparing espresso

  • Coffee selection: For a latte macchiato, we recommend a strong, full-bodied espresso that does not overpower the layers. We recommend coffees like Apas, Dreispitz, or Henrique, which are ideal for a latte macchiato due to their intensity and complex aromas.
  • Preparation: Extract the espresso directly into the 90ml pitcher. Ensure that the espresso is hotter than the milk foam so that the layers clearly separate from each other. If you find the espresso isn't hot enough, you can give it a boost with a small splash of hot water.

Step 3: Creating the layers

  • Pouring milk into the glass: Carefully pour the frothed milk into a tall glass to create the typical latte macchiato layers. Ensure the milk stays at the bottom and the foam floats on top.
  • Adding the espresso: Hold a long spoon against the rim of the glass to maintain the layering, and pour the espresso slowly into the glass. This keeps the three layers – the cool milk, the hot espresso, and the thick foam – clearly visible.

Final recommendation: Mix the latte macchiato layers slightly for the best taste

  • While a latte macchiato looks most beautiful when the layers are still visible, many cafés, such as our Café Frühling, suggest mixing the layers slightly to achieve the best taste. This ensures a well-rounded and harmonious flavor experience.
