First things first, we haven't tested Fellow's new coffee grinder yet. But what was announced for Q1 2023 as a new grinder certainly looks exciting. The Fellow Opus is designed as a filter coffee grinder, but according to the manufacturer, with its 41 grind settings, it can also grind espresso fine. For the American market, the Opus was announced with a price of $195.
The coffee grinder has a 41 mm conical burr, which distinguishes it more from the Fellow Ode 2. The Ode uses 64 mm flat burrs. The move to a conical burr is certainly one that brings the grinder into the more affordable price range. Conical burrs with smaller diameters are generally cheaper than flat burrs.
How does the new Fellow Opus taste?
It's too early to make statements about that. With the Ode 2, Fellow presented an exciting home coffee grinder for filter coffees. The burrs could be replaced with SSP burrs, turning the Ode 2 into a sensational grinder.
Conical burrs tend to produce more fines, which can affect the taste of the coffee. How this plays out with the Opus remains to be seen.
Fellow has learned, however, and is launching the Opus with the improved anti-static feature that the second generation of the Ode had. The first generation did indeed produce so many fines that a vacuum cleaner was needed after grinding.
If we learn more about the Opus or can get one for testing, we will keep you updated.
Availability of the Fellow Opus
It is currently completely unclear when the Opus will be launched in Europe and what its availability will be like. So far, mainly old Ode models are still being sold in Europe, not the newer Generation 2 ones.
So, keep your eyes open. If we spot the Fellow Opus, we will, of course, take a closer look and update this article.
The Fellow Ode 1 or 1.1 is available in Switzerland, for example, from Drip Roasters or Kaffeezentrale. In Germany, the Ode is available at Moka Consorten, Amazon* and other retailers. You should always inquire which version the respective retailer is selling.
As I said: We haven't found Version 2 yet. If you see it anywhere, please post the link as a comment, and we will update this article.
