A leveling tool is a useful tool for reducing errors in espresso preparation. It distributes the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter, reducing the risk of channeling.

Product features:

  • Leveling tool diameter: 51 mm - fits flush to the edge in standard 51 mm baskets
  • Manufacturer: Metallurgica Motta, Italy
  • Leveling depth: Adjustable by rotating clockwise, can be customized to your portafilter and coffee dose
  • Material: Stainless steel - food-safe

Compatibility:

  • Compatibility: Suitable for all portafilters with 51 mm baskets.
  • Compatible DeLonghi models: Dedica EC685, EC680, EC785, EC820, EC850, EC860, EC885 as well as the EC9335, EC9665, EC9155, and EC9355 series.
  • Compatible SMEG models: ECF01.

How do I set the leveler to the correct depth?

The leveling tool can be set to the desired depth by rotating the base clockwise.

This leveling tool does not replace tamping in the portafilter (for that, you will need a tamper ), but rather helps to distribute the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter.

The tool should be adjusted so that it does not compress the coffee grounds, but simply sits loosely on top to distribute them cleanly.

Why are we selling the Motta leveling tool?

Anyone who performs the steps of espresso preparation 100% the way our Michel Aeschbacher demonstrates in our home barista courses or our YouTube videos does not actually need a leveling tool.

But then again, who can truly say they do?

A leveling tool helps to eliminate a major source of error when operating a portafilter machine – the distribution of coffee grounds in the basket. The leveler ensures that the distribution is even, thereby reducing the risk of channeling.

That is why we sell this leveling tool.

We also like that Motta produces this useful little helper in Italy, so it didn't have to be shipped halfway across the globe.

Why is there a mark inside the leveling tool?

Inside the leveler, there is a deliberate scratch in the finish made by the manufacturer to prevent static electricity. This is not a defect or damage.
