What is a Single Boiler Espresso Machine?
A name-giving circuit runs through the espresso machine. This is a boiler that provides the water for brewing espresso. If the single boiler also has a steam wand, the boiler temperature must be increased to produce the steam pressure.
To make a cappuccino or latte macchiato, you switch to milk frothing mode after brewing the espresso. Depending on the machine, it takes anywhere from a few seconds to a minute for the boiler to reach full power.
With single boilers, steaming cannot be done in parallel with espresso extraction. If you use a lot of milk foam, you are usually better served with a heat exchanger machine. A heat exchanger enables parallel steaming and espresso brewing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Single Boiler Espresso Machines
How long does it take for a single boiler to heat up?
Depending on boiler size and heating power, most machines require between 10 and 20 minutes to become fully temperature stable.
Can I make cappuccino with a single boiler?
Yes, absolutely. However, after pulling the espresso, you need to press a button or switch to heat the water in the boiler to steam temperature. This usually takes 30 to 60 seconds.
What is the advantage over a heat exchanger?
Single boilers are generally more affordable, more compact, and often more temperature stable for pure espresso brewing, as the brew water comes directly from the boiler and is not heated via a heat exchanger.
