The Eureka Mignon Specialità is an espresso grinder for the medium entry-level range that already serves well in many households. In this test, we look at the Specialità and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses against the background of our comparison of 23 espresso grinders .
Disclaimer: You can try out and purchase the specialty in our store in Basel. We tend to evaluate devices that we own more strictly. Although all the criteria are the same as in the other tests, this information should not be missing to ensure the best possible transparency.
External facts about the Eureka Mignon Specialità
The Specialità is small and compact with its shallow depth. It is well made all around. Unfortunately, the plastic bean container sits somewhat narrowly on the grinder and can easily crack if used roughly.
- Grinding discs: disc grinder, 55 mm diameter
- Weight: 5.6kg
- Width: 120mm
- Height: 350mm
- Depth: 180mm
- Bean container: 250 gram capacity, plastic
The suspension of the portafilter is adjustable so that portafilters from common brands (ECM, La Marzocco etc.) hold without any problems. However, the portafilter should be held firmly during the grinding process, as the portafilter quickly comes out of the holder due to the vibration.
The Specialità is available in Germany for between 380 and 450 euros. In Switzerland the mill can be purchased for around 650 CHF.
Core competence: Grind espresso finely and well
The mill performed well in the test. Both the fines and the main peak of the particle distribution are in the better middle range in our comparison and enable tasty espressos in all facets with dark and light roasts. A comparative blind tasting will follow in this price range.
Grinding degree adjustment and usability of the Eureka Mignon Specialità
The grinding degree is adjusted using a small wheel that reacts to even the smallest adjustments with large changes. A steady hand and tact are required here. Anyone who has found a good setting will be rewarded with reliable reproducibility. The Specialità sets good standards here. In the single dosing test, there was only a 0.1 gram difference in the amount of 10 doses.
However, frequently changing the grinding level (e.g. when changing beans) is not much fun with the Specialità and leads to a lot of ground coffee.
The touch display enables intuitive and easy operation of the dosage quantity. We really liked that.
You can find the operating instructions for the Eureka Mignon Specialita here .
Dead space, speed and performance
The Specialità only has 2.7g of dead space. So there is little old coffee in the ground coffee, which negatively affects the taste. That is exemplary.
The speed of the mill is in the lower midfield, behind the ECM S64 but slightly ahead of the Niche Zero. The little one manages 21.3 grams in 10 seconds.
The Specialità is pleasantly quiet at 78.9 decibels. The ground material heats up to 37.2°C with 6 quick uses in a row, which is on the higher side. However, we could not detect any influence on the taste of the espressos.
Conclusion on the Eureka Mignon Specialità
The Specialità is a really good grinder for getting started in the world of espresso. If you don't want to try new beans every day, you will benefit from the consistency of this small mill. The good workmanship and low volume complete the overall picture. It's not for nothing that we use them in our coffee academies in Switzerland and Germany.
We have designed our own wooden lid for the Eureka Mignon Specialià (and other Eureka models). This lid is produced by our Moritz in our own workshop.
